LinkedIn – you couldn’t find a more appropriate name. LinkedIn is just that – you are linked in. The only question to be answered is what are you linked in to? Let’s explore a little more.
LinkedIn (http://www.linkedin.com/) is a business-networking site that allows the user to connect to others with similar interests. LinkedIn differs from other networking sites in that it is geared more towards professional business.
LinkedIn officially launched in 2003 (2011, LinkedIn). It currently services over 200 countries and has over 90 million members. It’s amazing to read that it took approximately only 16 months for LinkedIn to achieve 1 million members. That is a great accomplishment.
According to Jeff Weiner, chief executive of LinkedIn (2011, CNN), the new feature introduced in late 2010 that will allow users to review products and services will benefit others because the commentary is coming from people in their network, people that share common interests and from people they trust.
From the limited exposure I have had so far, LinkedIn seems to be more difficult than the other networking tools that I have been exposed to. This is partly due to the amount of information and connections that one can obtain. I was pleasantly surprised to see job opportunities and links to other Program Schedulers. Scheduling seems to be a unique job in the Buffalo area. Although I am very happy with my current position and employer and have no desire to seriously look anywhere else, I am always curious as to other Scheduling positions that may be available. My major curiosity is to know what types of companies use a Scheduler. It will also be good to have links to others that can help solve dilemmas that my colleagues and I may have. I believe that the information and contacts can be extremely beneficial to the user especially for those looking to advance in their careers.
As with all networking sites, one must maintain a professional image. One never knows who will search for them on the Internet. It could be a potential employer trying to find out exactly what kind of person you are. Talking with others about LinkedIn, it sounds like one also needs to be aware of who they let into their network. Besides for judging you directly, potential connections may judge you by who you are connected to. I am a little concerned right now because I could not find how to put a privacy setting on my account that will allow me to be notified of someone wishing to contact me so that I can chose if I want to accept or not. Can you let me know what I am missing?
