Have you noticed how laid back emailing is? What happened to the day of formal salutation and proper use of language? Yes email does not always need to be as formal depending on the subject and who the recipient is, but I think that even businesses have come a long way in allowing for such laid back ways.
Before venturing into emailing for either business or social purposes, take a few tips from experience users. This list can be a little lengthy but has a lot of value to it. If that is too long, at least read what Microsoft has summed up as 12 great tips to get your business started with email.
People think it’s really cute to use emoticons. According to Wikipedia (Emoticons, 2011), emoticons are punctuations and letters placed in such a way to depict the writer’s expression. : - ) Because emails are sometimes hard to depict if the writer is being serious or funny, sincere or sarcastic, these emoticons can help to get your point across. Be sure to use them sparingly. Too many emoticons can just be annoying and of course the wrong use of them can send the wrong message. Make sure you know what the meaning is before putting one of these in your email.

Included in email etiquette, which is a sore topic to many, is something called cyber bullying. According to SafetyWeb (Cyberbullying, 2010), 42% of kids Grades 4-8 have been bullied online, with 35% of them actually being threatened. It is very easy to say hurtful things or post embarrassing pictures online. After all, you don’t have to be strong and say it to the person’s face. You are hiding behind a computer. What many people don’t think about is the amount of people that email can reach in a short period of time. They also don’t stop to think about the ramifications that could result in one bad name-calling or one secret posted to the world. There have been many needless tragedies, including suicide, that have occurred as a result of cyberbullying. It’s good to know that New York State is 1 of just 4 states that actually have laws regarding cyberbullying (Cyberbullying, 2010). Be sure to know the signs of cyberbullying so that you and your family are safe. And be sure that they, in turn, do not bully anyone else.
